As someone who used to love the genre in the SNES/PSX days, I agree most modern JRPGs feel like animu garbage, but it wasn't always that way. From the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, comes an outrageous sequel to 2014's South Park : The Stick of Truth. If you haven't played many 16- or 32-bit JRPGs, you might find something you like. Breath of Fire III and IV are pretty great so is Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Lufia II, etc. Old school FF, especially in the SNES era, borrowed as much from D&D and Western RPGs as anything the series didn't go full tits anime till fairly recently. Earthbound and its sequel Mother 3 are both quirky and funny, and the latter involves stuff like magical transvestites, but it's still different from South Park.Īlso, if you might like JRPGs but don't like them being too 'anime,' you might try older games in the genre. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is funny, but it's not crude. There isn't a whole lot I can think of that has that same South Park feel to it. What I've played of Fractured But Whole feels like it borrows from Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre, Fire Emblem, etc.
